ASTM A182 specification covers requirements such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment and other supplementary requirements for 60 stainless steel forgings and forged products. This specification covers forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel pipe flanges, forged fittings, and valves and parts for high-temperature service. After hot working, forgings shall be cooled to a specific temperature prior to heat treatment, which shall be performed in accordance with certain requirements such as heat treatment type, austenitizing/solution temperature, cooling media, and quenching. The materials shall conform to the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, columbium, titanium.
ASTM A182 F60 is a forging material specification for 60 grade stainless steel and is used for manufacturing bare forgings or forged and machined products for applications involving high temperature service. ASTM A182 F60 is a standard duplex stainless steel forging grade. It has the same nominal composition 22Cr–5Ni–3Mo–N as ASTM A182 Gr. F51 but with narrower actual composition limits. Both F51 and F60 of ASTM A182 can be called “Alloy 2205” or “Duplex 2205”, but the UNS number of the former is S31803 while that of the latter is S32205. The composition range that was originally set for alloy 2205 (S31803) was too broad. Experience has shown that for optimum corrosion resistance and to avoid intermetallic phases, the chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen levels should be kept in the higher half of the ranges for S31803. Therefore, a modified 2205 with a narrower composition range was introduced with the UNS S32205.
